Seamus Connolly
Earle Hitchner, (Wall Street Journal, Irish Echo)writes: "This meticulously remastered solo debut by Seamus Connolly is a revelation in sound quality, in touch, and in taste, and shows in greater depth and detail why he is a living legend among Irish traditional fiddlers." An All-Ireland Champion Fiddle Player(10 times)Seamus is renowned both for his own mastery of the fiddle and for bringing the best traditional players to Boston College's Gaelic Roots Program over the years. His remastered "Notes" really brings out the full richness of Seamus's playing in a way that the original cassette recording could not. Listen to the opening track "The Highest Hill in Sligo" (an Ed Reavy composition given personally to Seamus on a visit to his home by Ed Reavy in the 60's). This is some of the best, cleanest sounding traditional fiddle you could hear. Then listen to the set starting with "Queen of May" dedicated to the great Piper Leo Rowsome. Seamus is joined on the track by Liam O'Flynn on pipes. This is beautiful music. Additionally, the background information given by Seamus on the sleeve notes is as much a pleasure to have as the music itself for those who love this traditional music.

Jimmy Noonan - The Maple Leaf
Jimmy Noonan and friends give you the best of Irish Traditional Music from Boston. This is excellent traditional Flute playing from Jimmy, backed up by a great group. "This CD was rated the 5th best traditional recording in 2001 by the "Irish Voice". Recorded by Jimmy Noonan (flute), Michael Shorrock (bouzouki), Chris McGrath (fiddle and concertina) and Ted Davis (guitar). All of these masterful players combine to create a powerful sound. They are some of the best session players / musicians on the Irish music scene today. Based in Boston, where the best Irish traditional music is played in the states! With very tight ties to Doolin, County Clare. Kevin Griffin is a guest artist, a fantastic banjo player from Doolin. Kevin and Michael recorded "Across the Pond" after the recording of the "Maple Leaf". Myron Bretholz, the master of the bodhran, is also a guest artist on this beautiful selection of great traditional tunes!"(CD Baby)

John Gannon - Melodeon
John Gannon is the head of a very talented musical family here in Boston. His son Colm won an All-Ireland Championship on the Accordian and his oldest son Sean is also a very talented box player. With the emergence of this CD, you can hear where all that good Galway music came from. John plays the Melodeon with a fresh, unique but very traditional sound that takes you back to the origins of this great music. Listen to the way he makes the Boys of Bluehill and the Connaughtman's Rambles spirited and new again, and, my new favorite tunes on this CD are the "Killavil" and "Johnny will you Marry Me." Pick your own favorites after lots of pleasurable listening.

Colm Gannon - Return to Droim
Colm Gannon has made this excellent first album and it won't be his last. Listening to the various tunes you can hear the nice embellishments and full mastery of the accordian, on top of the solid sound learned at home. I just listened to the Plains of Boyle, Callaghans and The Fairy Hornpipe again and it's beautiful music.

Forget Me Not - Seamus Connolly & Laurel Martin
This CD and Book collection of 50 Memorable Traditional Irish Tunes was compiled and recorded by Seamus Connolly and Laurel Martin. Seamus needs no introduction in traditional irish music circles and Laurel is also a wonderful fidle player and teacher in the Boston College Irish Music Program where Seamus is a Professor. A great feature of this book and 2CD set is that Laurel and Seamus give you two versions of each tune in the book; a basic unornamented version and than a faster ornamented version. This is an excellent way for students of traditional music to learn the tunes and to see how ornamentation can be added to the basic melody.

Oil for the Chain - Book/CD's - by Shannon Heaton
This is a very impressive "How To..... Book" by Shannon Heaton. For serious students of Irish Traditional Music this is a very thoughtful and helpfull work, as Shannon takes you through some of the old standard session tunes ("Maid Behind the Bar", "The Bird in the Bush")as well as her new compositions. As Shannon says "It doesn't matter what tunes you play it's how you play them". With that in mind she does pick great tunes and then shows you step by step how to play them in a session. The CD's are a great help in giving you a good sense of the overall tune, while Shannon gives you a breakdown of the notes and techniques in the book. The personal notes from Shannon about how to approach the music and join in sessions (and most especially to have fun)are delightful. Shannon's "other half" Matt, contributed his composition "Oil for the Chain" for the title track. This jig and other wonderful new tunes by Matt and Shannon are also on their "dearga" and "Blue Skies" CD's. You will greatly enjoy all of their music.

Laurel Martin - The Groves
This is wonderful fiddle music from Laurel Martin. You can hear every note in each of the tunes, and it is a wonderful selection of reels, jigs and hornpipes. Laurel plays the tunes in a clean, clear, unhurried style that speaks to the influence of the great Clare fiddle playing of Seamus Connolly and Paddy Canny. Laurel did learn from, and then played along side, Seamus Connolly, and now teaches with him at the Boston College Irish Music Program. Laurel is very much in demand as a fiddle teacher. She is a truly inspired (and inspiring)teacher along with her obvious love of Irish music.

Matt & Shannon Heaton - Blue Skies Above
This is a wonderful CD from Matt and Shannon Heaton. Shannon is blessed with a great singing voice as well as the ability to play incredible flute music. Matt provides a rich blend of accompaniment with guitar, bouzouki, mandola, bodhran and vocals. This is a CD which will please lovers of traditional Irish Music as well as those who enjoy original interpretations of good songs. This very musical couple is amazing to watch in concert. I was lucky enough to see them perform at Boston College's "Irish music Series". WOW! Great interplay between guitar, vocals and flute and wonderful music and song writing or re-interpreting. On top of being incredible musicians, Shannon and Matt are both highly esteemed teachers in the Boston Comhaltas School. Do check out and buy their first CD made with their group Dearga; and catch them at local Concerts.
