This book contains an excellent cross section of Reels, Jigs, Hornpipes and Airs, including a great selection of O'Carolan's tunes. Patrick Steinbach is a very discriminating professional musician born in Germany to an Irish Mother and German Father, who was a jazz musician. This is a very thorough guide for a student starting on the mandolin. Philip Berthoud is a very serious player and teacher who takes you from the basics of holding the instrument, through beginning theory and note reading, ideas on practice and attending sessions, and on to serious jig and reel playing. Oil For The Chain - Book&CDTutor-Shannon Heaton
This is a very impressive "How To..... Book" by Shannon Heaton. For serious students of Irish Traditional Music this is a very thoughtful and helpfull work, as Shannon takes you through some of the old standard session tunes ("Maid Behind the Bar", "The Bird in the Bush")as well as her new compositions. As Shannon says "It doesn't matter what tunes you play it's how you play them". With that in mind she does pick great tunes and then shows you step by step how to play them in a session. The CD's are a great help in giving you a good sense of the overall tune, while Shannon gives you a breakdown of the notes and techniques in the book. The personal notes from Shannon about how to approach the music and join in sessions (and most especially to have fun)are delightful. Shannon's "other half" Matt, contributed his composition "Oil for the Chain" for the title track. This jig and other wonderful new tunes by Matt and Shannon are also on their "dearga" and "Blue Skies" CD's. You will greatly enjoy all of their music.

This is a beautiful book, full of clear instruction, wonderful historical pictures of Irish musicians and a most helpful supporting CD. Kathleen Nesbitt's Irish Fiddle Tutorial "fidil" is the perfect book for the beginning to advanced student of the Irish fiddle. Kathleen is a well known Performer and Master Teacher in Ireland with wide experience. Since 1983 she has run Master Classes prior to the Fleadh Ceoil na hEireann in Ireland, and became a lecturer and assessor on the diploma course run for Music Teachers by Comhaltas. This fidil book is very well organized, with clear illustrations to help the beginning student orient themselves correctly to the instrument. It teaches exciting tunes and presents techniques in step by step fashion to advance student skills. Listening to the ornamentation (so clear on the CD)after studying the book, is very helpful. This book was recommended to me by a very good traditional fiddle teacher in Boston, and as I continue to study and enjoy it I am very glad that she did so.
